International Baccalaureate

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based curriculum framework designed for children aged 3 to 12 that fosters academic, social, and emotional growth, encouraging students to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners with a strong sense of international-mindedness. At Hughes Primary School, the IB PYP is a framework for mapping the Australian Curriculum and Early Years Learning Framework concepts, knowledge and skills from preschool to year 6.

Hughes Primary School is pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Hughes Primary believes is important for our students.

Only schools authorised by the IB Organisation can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP).  Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. Learner Profile

The IB Learner Profile represents a set of attributes that aim to develop internationally minded individuals who recognize their common humanity and shared responsibility for the planet. By striving to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective, students become lifelong learners prepared to make a meaningful contribution to the world.

International Mindedness

International mindedness is at the heart of the IB philosophy, fostering an openness to the world and a deep respect for diverse cultures, perspectives, and languages. It encourages students to see themselves as global citizens—curious, compassionate, and committed to understanding and improving the world around them.

Student Agency

Student agency is a fundamental component of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), empowering learners to take ownership of their learning by encouraging voice, choice, and ownership in the classroom. Through agency, students actively participate in decision-making, set personal goals, and engage in meaningful inquiry, fostering independence, motivation, and a lifelong love of learning.
