WELCOME

2014 is a very exciting year for all of us at Hughes Primary School!  We are turning 50! We feel extremely lucky to benefit this year from 18 months of refurbishment, and proudly opened our doors to new vibrant team-teaching learning spaces. New bold colours are adorning the walls of our new classrooms to represent colours identified in our local flora and fauna – allowing us to celebrate in the natural beauty that surrounds Canberra and the ACT.

This dynamic learning community is nestled in wonderful tree filled surroundings. I feel it is a privilege to lead Hughes Primary School – a place where children feel valued , engaged and nurtured, where staff provide exemplary teaching and consistent care for students, where parents are acknowledged as powerful partners--- with all of us striving to enjoy every day in every way.

Our school has mainstream classes from Preschool to Yr 6. Our school hosts the Southside Primary Introductory English Centre - we continually welcome families who newly arrive in Canberra from all over the world. Needless to say, the high multicultural presence in our school demonstrates the wide world around us and we thrive in an inclusive environment. Our school has a Learning Support Unit-Autism – for those students living with Autism. I am proud to say, our students value diversity, promote healthy relationships and definitely are global citizens.

We have sister schools in New Jersey and England. We are immensely looking forward to having closer connections this year through creating student blogs, email mates and research correspondence.

We take enormous pride in celebrating achievements of students, teachers and parents/carers. We believe that positive, authentic recognition of a job well done is of paramount importance to growing a positive self-image. We offer students a variety of academic challenges, leadership opportunities, sporting pursuits, artistic avenues and service learning – the essence of giving back. Last year, our school raised the highest amount from any independent body across Australia! This money improved the life of children in Dili, our students understand empathy and creatively conjure ways to raise awareness and money to make a difference.

Our team of committed teachers provide educational programs from preschool to Yr 6 that are robust and rigorous, showing clear evidence of highly developed skills, and evidenced based best practices. Each teacher adds their own ‘magic and spark” to their class. All staff undertake regular professional development and many professional conversations shape the direction of this synergistic school. Our whole school PD this year will focus on Literacy, gifted and talented education/differentiation and EALD (English as an Additional language/dialect). We believe being united in this approach will add deep value to raising student outcomes.

Our school has four main values that underpin our work, our thinking and our actions. We relish any opportunity to shine – actively promoting our key values and beliefs. Our CARE vales are:

Cooperation

Attitude

Respect

Excellence

Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand

(Chinese proverb)

We warmly welcome enquiries from prospective families about all aspects of our school. Please make sure you look at our newsletters here too – they show a fascinating insight into each classroom every fortnight. Find us on Facebook too!
