WELCOME

As new Principal of Hughes Primary School, I feel honoured to join this exciting learning community. Hughes Primary School is a unique ACT school. We have mainstream classes from Preschool to Yr 6. The Southside Introductory English Centre is based within our school and we welcome many families from different countries, greatly benefiting from wide multicultural presence. We also have a Learning Support Unit - Autism, and together, we have built and continue to build a community of inclusion, affinity and respect.

The green, tree filled playgrounds surround the school creating an atmosphere inviting students to be fully immersed in their wonderful world of learning. All staff of Hughes Primary School have enthusiastic determination to engage students in a wide range of educational experiences to promote challenging, insightful, enriching learning. With continued strong parental and community support, our school is well placed to achieve great results – growing our students to be active 21st century citizens.

We take great pride in celebrating achievements of students. We believe that positive recognition for a job well done is of paramount importance to growing a healthy self-image. We offer students a variety of academic challenges, leadership opportunities, sporting pursuits, artistic avenues and service learning – the essence of giving back. We highly value relationships with the local community based on building a sense of belonging and we increase the student’s understanding of the importance we individually play to enrich a community.

Our team of committed teachers provide educational programs from preschool to Yr 6 that are robust and rigorous showing clear evidence of highly developed skills and evidenced based best practices. All staff undertake regular professional development and many professional conversations shape the future direction of this wonderful school.

The Australian Curriculum is being implemented at Hughes. The Melbourne Declaration commits "to supporting all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens", and to promoting equity and excellence in education. The Australian Curriculum will "equip all young Australians with the essential skills, knowledge and capabilities to thrive and compete in a globalised world and information rich workplaces of the current century." We have implemented English, Maths, Science and History. The next phase will introduce Geography, The Arts and Languages in 2013.

Our school has four main values that underpin our work, our thinking and our actions. We relish any opportunity to shine – actively promoting our key values and beliefs.

Our CARE values:                                         Co-operation

                                                                Attitude

                                                                Respect

                                                                Excellence

Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.

(Chinese proverb)

We welcome enquiries from existing and prospective families about all aspects of our school.

 Regards

 Kate Smith
